High School Students Built This iPhone App for the Visually Impaired

Members of a high school machine-learning club have developed an inexpensive smartphone application for those with low or impaired vision.
Eugene Choi, Raffu Khondaker, Irfan Nafi, and Pranav Ravella are seniors at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Alexandria, Va.
“We noticed that the computer-vision field has gotten to a point where it could detect objects with really good accuracy and describe a scene just like a human would,” Choi says. “The immediate application we thought…

North Carolina chosen by Toyota for US battery factory

Toyota is to establish a US battery manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, with the facility named Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina (TBMNC). When it comes online in 2025, TBMNC will have four production lines each capable of delivering enough lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 vehicles — with the intention to expand to at least six […]

October 2021 Tornadoes

According to data from NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, during October, there were 146 preliminary tornado reports. This is more than double the 1991-2010 average of 61 tornadoes for the month of October. This is also the second highest preliminary tornado count on record for October behind 2018. October was an active month for tornadoes with at least eight days reporting 10 or more tornadoes. There were also two EF-3 tornadoes reported on October 24 in Missouri and Illinois. Being More Inclusive is Paying Off for This IEEE Society

Being More Inclusive is Paying Off for This IEEE Society

Small changes made over time can lead to big results, the saying goes. A great example of that is the concerted effort the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society started more than two decades ago to become a more welcoming and inclusive environment for women and members from outside the United States. Since 2012, the society has increased the number of female members by more than 60 percent. And more articles are now submitted from authors in China, India, and Italy…

Weathernews tests latest high-speed meteorological radar technology

Weathernews tests latest high-speed meteorological radar technology

Japanese weather information platform Weathernews has installed its new high-frequency compact weather radar in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture, and is currently undertaking a field test to verify its efficacy.
The new Eagle radar performs 360° observations within 30 seconds, enabling the near real-time tracking of the development of cumulonimbus clouds within a 50km radius. This makes it possible to capture guerilla thunderstorms, linear precipitation zones, heavy snow, wind gusts, hail, and other localized weather events with greater accuracy.
The Eagle radar is intended…

Toyota shows off hydrogen-powered Yaris GR concept

Alongside its ongoing project to test a hydrogen-fueled IC engine under racing conditions in Japan’s Super Taikyu series using a modified Corolla, Toyota has unveiled a hydrogen-powered Yaris GR. Both cars feature the same G16E-GTS, 1.6-liter, in-line three-cylinder, turbocharged engine that is found in the regular GR Yaris, but with a modified fuel supply and […]

EUMETSAT initiates deorbiting process for Metop-A

European meteorological satellite agency EUMETSAT has begun deorbiting Metop-A after more than 15 years of service, three times longer than expected.
The process will see the satellite spiral downward in progressively lower orbits until it disintegrates upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, a process that is expected to end within the next 25 years.
The process of removing the satellite from its orbit began on November 15, when the satellite began to be lowered so that its point of orbit closest to the Earth…

IEEE President’s Note: We’re Committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

IEEE’s mission to foster technological innovation and excellence to benefit humanity requires the talents and perspectives of people with different personal, cultural, and technical backgrounds. In support of this mission—and to aid our members and volunteers—it is vital that members have a safe and inclusive place for collegial discourse and that all feel included and that they belong.
